Keira Knightley is an American actress and model who has known success from an early age. She was noticed in 2002, after co-starring in the movie “Bend It Like Beckham”. In 2003 her career took off after her appearance in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series.

The first part of the series, called “The Curse of the Black Pearl”, was an unexpected success, with over 650 million dollars worldwide in box office. The plot follows the blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and the eccentric pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as they team up to rescue Will’s love, Elizabeth Swaan (Keira Knightley), from the hands of Jack’s former allies, the undead pirates. The film’s director, Gore Verbinski, said that Keira’s talent came as a pleasant surprise for him, because he did not see her performance in “Bend It Like Beckham”.

Keira’s character, Elizabeth Swann, is the daughter of Weatherby Swann, the governor. She is in love with Will Turner, but since she has always been fascinated by pirates, she gives her name as Turner during the Black Pearl’s attack on Port Royal, but she is mistaken for “Bootstrap” Bill’s child and kidnapped. Until Jack and Will come to her rescue, the defenseless young lady turns herself into a noble pirate.

The sequel, “Dead Man’s Chest”, followed in 2006. The day she was supposed to marry Will, Elizabeth Swan is arrested for helping Jack Sparrow escape. She herself escapes then from jail and meets up with Jack to search for Will and the chest.

In 2007 the third part of the series was released, “At World’s End”. Elizabeth Swann goes to Jack’s rescue after tricking him into being swallowed by the Kraken, in order to save herself and the Black Pearl crew.

Although Keira’s character no longer appears in the following movies, the first 3 films of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series were enough for Keira Knightely to gain a reputation of one of the most talented actresses in the world. With important prizes like Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, Keira became in 2008 the second highest paid actress in Hollywood.

Although Kiera Knightley’s career may be somewhat short, she has managed to accomplish an immense amount so far. They had also worked together on a commercial for Chanel perfume in 2008. Both Joe Wright and Keira donated their time to the Cut campaign; they also organized a team of around fifty other people to donate their time to help create the commercial. Others on the Cut project included the BAFTA nominated makeup artist Ivana Primorac and Academy Award nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey. The commercial was produced during January 2009 and was expected to be on air by April of that year.

The campaign was in fact well received by the public. The short film had over half a million viewers online in the first six days. This swiftly rose to over one million. Only two people who viewed the commercial wrote to complain about it to the Advertising Standards Authority. The media had mixed reactions to the commercial. Some found that it was a powerful way to send a message to young women; others did not see the point of the commercial. Cut became a financial and critical success. During the campaign the charity reported a thirty three percent increase in the awareness of the charity. The Cut campaign was shortlisted for a Cyber Lion at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

Of course her list of movies will continue to grow, as she has no plans to marry any time soon and offers keep rolling in as she is in high demand for movies. The young actress is taking roles but she has felt as if she is plain and simply working too much. No one can blame her, as she is a fairly in demand actress and contracts are thrown left and right with her only accepting a few projects she really likes!

With the help of the campaign Keira wanted to show that domestic violence really exists not depending on a social status but the problem is that people hardly hear about it. According to Kiera domestic violence negatively influence on women at some point in their lifetime and moreover it kills two women every week.

The add breaks stereotypes concerning victims of domestic violence, as Keira Knightley plays a character like herself, i.e. a young actress. The message of the add is that even a successful woman may experience abuse at home.

In the two-minute commercial made by Joe Wright, the 25 year old actress is attacked by her boyfriend, she gets kicks in the stomach, slaps in her face and her hair is pulled. Her boyfriend attacks her verbally and physically when she gets home as he indicts her for having a relationship with a co-star.

The ad ends with Knightley screaming and the caption: “Isn’t it time someone called cut?”

It will be possible to see the extended ad on 6 April in 15-plus films in cinemas that starts with Knightley heading home from a long day of filming.

Together with Wright, Knightley made donation of their time in order to make the commercial for free.
